| BOOK REVIEWS GETTING STARTED ON YOUR 401(K) PLAN In this book, Jo Ann Brown challenges the reader to be more pro- active in managing their personal finances, specifically gaining profits from their 401(k). As she states, most employees who enroll in a 401(k) plan, make a few basic decisions regarding the type of mutual funds to which their contributions are directed, and then take a hands-off approach regarding their participation in managing their funds. Investors naively assume that product managers or employers have the contributor’s best interest in mind, and are fully capable of managing the employee’s assets. She councils that this approach will result in marginal, if any, real growth in their retirement fund. As an alternative, Jo Ann offers advice on becoming a more active participant in managing funds. She is concise and articulate in offering strategies that will allow the investor to make educated decisions to increase their financial rate of growth. Along the way you will learn that investing doesn’t have to be a crapshoot, how to avoid being sent to the battlefield without a gun, and the reason why pigs get fat, and hogs get slaughtered. Her approach does require discipline and time for intensive research. A first wise choice may be to pick up her book, as an initial step to financial comfort and freedom. I've met Jo Ann personally and she is patient and calm speaker that gets you to listen and think about your financial future in a way most of the fast talking financial planners can't. Great book. I wish I would have met Jo Ann and her book years ago. ____________________________________________________ Iona Hollins – retired teacher/school librarian writes – 40 years ago this information would have made me a millionaire. Jennings - AAD Customer Service - St. Paul, MN writes- It was my pleasure to spend some time with you while you were in Minnesota promoting your book. When Willard first told me about your publication, I was excited and glad to see another Black woman (and especially one from my hometown) who has something else out here in the marketplace that we all - us and our families - can benefit from. As I did mention while you were here - you do have a tool that is easy to read, easy to understand and one can easily put a plan into place after reading it. However, I do think that targeting the younger market would gain more of a benefit simply because we all are typically slow to start investing - we have the tendency to procrastinate and start later because we have less confident overall about our ability to invest wisely. A lot of companies do financial education, but it is not enough. And I think this is where your book will come into play with the younger generation. It gives them the tools to start early to reach those targeted goals. __________________________________________________ Keith Machisen Western Union Bridgeton CSC Manager, Workforce Jo Ann Brown has made a masterpiece.
